The job market outside is frightful

but the blog is soooo delightful.
Sheesh what a morning. This may come as a shock to you all, but I couldn’t sleep last night. my skin wasn’t just crawling, it took X and was raving it’s little pink/beige self all over my body like factor’s night toots were the latest break beats. By the time I was supposed to get up, i had finally started falling asleep. And when I FINALLY got up to hit the shower for my first ever meeting with a temp/permanent placement agency I was severely depressed. I’m talking 2 burps from crying every two seconds down. i tried to shake it, but when I got to the agency and saw Beth, a friendly familiar face, I almost lost my mind. i had forgotten my second form of identification, my coat zipper shit the bed, and my shirt kept squirreling up my back. i felt a mess. We went into a private office and gabbed a bit and she prepped me for what was to come. And what came was really good. I spoke with 2 other women and both were high energy, friendly, and had me convinced that they are on a mission to help me get some cash flow.
And, the super duper part is that a possible position has already arisen and my resume has been sent off. Something that’s really pissing me off, however, is the state of salary. there are jobs in this city that actually pay 35,000 or less a year. No one who lives in the city can live with that salary. and these are positions that require skill and dedication. And people must be accepting that measly salary or these companies wouldn’t keep offering it.
“How can a business thinks it’s good for THEM to actually hire someone less qualified but more willing to take that salary than the person with superior skills. I just don’t get it”
Beth was quiet and then said “because there are kids just out of college willing to take it”
“I guess I still haven’t come to terms with the fact that there is no heart in it.”
Passion is a buzzword, people. Your passion for the job isn’t going to give you that nose length above Tiffany from NC State who wants that 35K while she commutes from cousin Jeffery’s basement in Queens. And honey, that’s not hard work ethic, that’s pure pawnism. you’re part of the game that keeps salaries down and really geeked up people demotivated. It’s probably also what’s keeping personality out of New York City and transforming it into a gentrified club capital where MK Olson is mayor.
I rescheduled my “discussion” that I was supposed to have today at 2:30 for 1:00PM tomorrow. I am glad the guy was open to a reschedule - I would like to meet, but today I’m too crappy.
On the upside, I bought beautiful flowers at Trader Joe’s.
I just read an article in the NY Times and thought of this post. Apparently if Tiffany wants to be a NYC police officer, she needs to lower her expectations, “One of the department’s barriers to recruiting … is the $25,100 starting salary; police officials say the salary is low enough to discourage many qualified applicants.” Gee, you think?
And what’s sad is THAT is for people who are supposed to protect us and take the high road. There is no way you can work in nyc as a police officer and actually live in the city you’re “paid” to protect. That is a sad sad state of affairs.
