Met this guy last night. I was feeling really inferior with my little XTi snapping away with no addons, just me. this guy had some magical flash rounder outer, a huge battery pack, and a honkin lens. We looked at each other, did the ole camera nod (its like a gentle lifting of the cameras at each other, like we’re letting our dogs sniff each others’ butts), and he came over. He told me that the rounder outer thing is magic. Totally blows away peoples flaws without blowing out their retinas. I watched him in action and really did feel impotent the rest of the night. I was afraid to look at my “roll” of crappy blurred out crappy crap. I really had anxiety about it, I’m not going to lie.
But you know what? I got some really decent shots given the low light (again!) and irritable subjects (I got rejected for the first time.. by the first group of gals I met. Your shit stinks just like the rest of us, snatchbags)
Anyway, here’s the guy - one of my favorite shots of the night:

you can find his stuff at www.azikiwephoto.com
I know that camera nod too, it must be an international sign as it works here. Thats a good picture, I’m sure he’ll be happy with that, even without a magic flash.
I don’t know what a “magical flash rounder outer” is, but it sounds very cool and very expensive. I used to show up at events with my press pass and Minolta 450si, so for two years I was surrounded by people with $10k worth of equipment bought and paid for by their newspaper. I’m pretty sure their camera bags cost more than my equipment. Not being jealous was something I had to work at… but I got there.
I like the purple people in the far background, it looks like the light is coming from the magic flash.
If you ever feel anxious about the size of your equipment again, I bought a pocket digital last year to see what the hype’s all about. I haven’t done any event shooting with it but I have nightmares where I have to…
I love this picture! How the heck do you keep someone in focus and get the background all squiggly and interesting?
awesome shot. i really am impressed that you can get this look without the flash/diffuser combo… can’t wait to see what you get once you have those in your possession!
Gabriel, I’m REALLY having a hard time with the jealousy part. It’s something I need to get over more so because it’s also mixed with me thinking those people around me are disdaining and sort of blowing off my camera and possible skills. But I shouldn’t care about that. The proof is in the pasta sauce, right?
I always like when there are accidental blurs.
Kim and Maria, it’s alllll accidental. I just focus on the person, I don’t use flash, and the person stays very still. With luck:)
Ok, really, what is this flash rounder outer thingy? I want to know more! Hubby and I need to get a new camera soon and we’re going to splurge…mostly because I won’t have it any other way (: I’d love to look into this contraption a bit more…do you know the real name? (:
Are you talking about a flash bracket that swings around? Or a lightsphere diffuser on the flash? I’m so confused.
well I wish this wasn’t spam. Interesno is something I plan to say forever
